Happy Earth Day! Member Spotlight #1: Happywhale

Welcome to our first edition of Member Spotlight! We will be featuring one member per month who exemplifies what it means to be a Green Spacer.

Our first blog post features member Tory, who works as an Ambassador one day per week for our space and spends the rest of her office hours studying whale tails.

Read on to learn more about the awesome work she is doing!

What is Happywhale?

We track humpback whales by crowdsourcing photos of the bottom of their tails. We have a photo-ID software that works much like facial recognition software that can ID the whale based off the pattern on its tail. It makes this sort of research a lot less expensive and more engaging for the general public.

My boss, Ted Cheeseman, started Happywhale as a Ph.D. project because his background is in eco-tourism and he saw the potential of crowdsourcing images from all over the world in order to provide inexpensive data for science. It took off so much in California that he decided to build it into a Public Benefit Corporation.

What does your role as Data Manager at Happywhale entail?

I'm the only full-time employee who is not a developer. I manage the images and data that are submitted by researchers, naturalists and whale watchers. We match new images against our existing known individuals and then we track the whales once identified.

I also interact with our contributors and encourage others to submit their images.
